Akash Residents in Camden
Combating isolation, enriching lives, broadening horizons and making each moment matter
Akash has developed a dynamic and inclusive programme that is getting to the core of tackling the problems of isolation, marginalisation and loneliness experienced by older people in British cities who come from minority communities.
Most of our members do not have English as their first language and the risks of isolation and loneliness are present so the association has embarked on an ambitious programme to engage its membership in a rolling programme of events, festivals, meetings, outings and classes.
The pioneering digital inclusion programme developed by Akash has been hailed as an outstanding success.
Starting from scratch with few of the members having any experience of tablet computing we have been able to kindle new interests, help people communicate with the council services and their friends and family and to follow new activities as well find new was of enjoying the things they love, like watching films and listening to their favourite music.
The association also offers Tea & Coffee afternoons; a Video Club; Minibus trips; Gardening; Arts & Crafts; Day Trips; and other classes.
The core of the Akash Residents' Association is a group of around 40 people aged over 50 years who live in Bloomsbury in accommodation provided by a housing association.
We have been fortunate in attracting funding from The People's Health Trust and we have also been able to take advantage of the provisions of the Ageing Better Camden scheme funded through Age UK.
